Following pressure from local residents, organisations such as Friends of
South Park, and Green Party City Council candidate Alex Powell, Oxford
City Council have announced a programme of works to restore the condition
of South Park.
Work on the park is scheduled to begin once the ground is in a dry state
with the work progressing across three stages starting with the top and
driest part of the park and working downwards. However, it is likely to be
several months before the park is restored to a good state.
Green Party Candidate for St Clement’s Alex Powell said, “It is good
news that the City Council is going to take steps to restore the condition of
South Park. However, it remains a matter of serious concern that the park
has been left in such a poor condition for such an extended period.
“The reality is that by the time repairs are completed the park will have been
in a poor condition for almost 6 months, leaving the park inaccessible for
many residents for half of the year.
“The Green Party will continue to push the Council to ensure that these
kinds of unacceptable damage are not repeated in future years. The
maintenance of parks and public spaces is a central responsibility of the
City Council and the situation in South Park over the past four months has
fallen unacceptably below the standards we should all expect.”
